American Airlines

American Airlines has abolished change fees on all domestic international travel in Premium Cabin and Main Cabin areas when travel originates from North America. Customers who buy Basic Economy fares may now buy extras like upgrades, seats, priority boarding and same-day flight changes. They are waiving change fees on existing and new Basic Economy fares bought by March 31, 2021 for all future travel as well. Basic Economy Fares bought after April 1, 2021 are non-refundable and non-changeable.

Additionally, customers will no longer have to pay a service charge when booking their tickets through reservations.

If Main Cabin (except Basic Economy), Premium Economy, Business Class, and First Class customers change flights to a cheaper fare, customers will receive a voucher for the remaining value of their original ticket.

Customers are able to fly stand by for flights on the same day as their original departure to the same destination at no charge. This includes domestic and international travel, regardless of the ticket you bought.

Additionally, American has extended its pause on mileage expiration through June 30, 2021. For new tickets booked between now and September 8, 2020, we’re expanding our offer to waive change fees for travel January 1, 2021, and later. They’re also enhancing the AAdvantage program, extending travelers’ elite status through early 2022.

American Airlines has also introduced free name change policies for corporate customers with tickets purchased on or before July 31, 2020. Customers can make one name change free of charge. The ticket must contain a valid CART/Business Extra number or JBID in the Tour Code box. Your agency can also process this change in their GDS without a waiver code. This free name change is combinable with other qualifying waivers.

Normal ticketing rules apply for tickets purchased before May 31, 2020 with travel outside the March 1, 2020 through September 30, 2020 window and tickets purchased June 1, 2020 or later.

Starting January 1, 2021, Basic Economy tickets will no longer earn elite qualifying dollars, miles, or segments toward future status.

Due to the increased flight changes, American Airlines has stopped checking pets for now. Carry-on pets and service animals are still allowed to fly in the cabin if they meet the requirements.

American Airlines has a new set of policies for travel with emotional support animals and service animals. The Department of Transportation’s new rule defines “a service animal as a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a qualified individual with a disability.” Starting January 11, 2021, American Airlines will no longer authorize new travel for emotional support animals. However, existing bookings with emotional support animals will be honored through February 1, 2021.

American Airlines is also taking additional measures to clean their aircrafts. They’ve extended the use of an EPA-approved, hospital-grade disinfectant that kills 99.99% of viruses and bacteria and lasts up to 7 days. They also have HEPA filters on all mainline aircraft and most regional jets that refresh the cabin air every two to four minutes. Flight staff is also disinfecting high-touch and public areas between flights and providing hand wipes or gels on most international and some domestic flights.

All travelers are required to wear face coverings while flying American. Additionally, they’ve expanded this rule to cover the airport where your trip begins, where it connects, and where it ends. Your face covering must cover your nose and mouth. As of August 19, 2020, face coverings with exhaust valves or vents, or made with mesh or lace type fabric, are not allowed on American Airlines flights.

As of February 2, 2021, customers with disabilities who are unable to wear a mask must notify the airline’s Special Assistance team at least 72 hours prior to their flight’s departure to request an exemption from the mask requirement.

The Boeing 737 MAX has also returned to service after it was recertified by the FAA.
