What You Need To Know About Workcations

2020 has been an insane year, to say the least. 2020 is the year of TikTok, banana bread, toilet paper, and WFH… except WFH doesn’t necessarily mean “Work from Home.” In fact, WFH took on a new meaning in 2020: “Work from Hotel,” thus revolutionizing the “Workcation.”

After months in quarantine, many Americans grew sick of their stuffy apartments and needed a change of scenery… AKA a workcation.

Workcations are trips where you combine work and leisure together. Prior to 2020, workcations entailed extending a business trip and inviting your spouse along. However, this year, there haven’t been too many business trips to extend into leisure trips. In 2020, workcations mean packing up your laptop, loading the whole family into the minivan, and escaping to the beach, mountains, or countryside for a few days, weeks, or even months.

Since so many offices and schools have gone virtual this year, many families have opted for extended trips. As long as the destination has WiFi and travelers follow social distancing guidelines, there’s no reason not to get a change of scenery. With the coldest months still ahead, a beach retreat is looking more and more appealing for some.

Workcations aren’t the same as regular vacations. Since they do involve actual work, it’s best to choose a location where your itinerary includes time to spend at your laptop during regular work hours. Many opt for a cozy Airbnb or a relaxing resort where they can potentially spend their office hours poolside in the sun. Some hotels are even transforming their rooms into work from home offices.
